“I felt really blessed when I moved to Thamesmead to be surrounded by so many parks and green spaces, especially when I grew up in a country covered mainly by desert. I knew then that I would love to join a walking group and meet up with parents to help make friends, explore more of my new home, get active and try to lose the extra weight I put on during pregnancy - (I still call it pregnancy weight and my daughter is almost 8!)

When I read about The Mason Mile charity and that they were launching walking volunteer roles in Thamesmead, I couldn't have been happier! I felt very enthusiastic about this flexible role within a Foundation that honours the volunteers by giving them the title of Ambassador.

Usually when we hear the phrase "getting active", we think of the exhausting kind of exercise that is difficult to keep up. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that you can walk a mile in 15 minutes! After so many months in lockdown, I cannot wait to celebrate "freedom" in nature, meet new people, learn new things, and improve my physical and mental health!”

“I was diagnosed with Breast cancer in 2016 and had surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. I was also diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes at the end of my treatment when I had sepsis. After my diagnosis, I started walking with patients from Guy’s hospital, which I soon found I really loved - and it helped me to get fit and control my diabetes.

But since lockdown, I have struggled to get motivated for walking and looking after my health. When I found out about The Mason Mile, I was so excited as this was just what I needed to get me motivated again and to motivate the community. The role really suited me as I know the local area and local people well.

I have spoken to many families and they feel the same as they have struggled being at home in lockdown. I hope I will inspire families to get fit and healthy and I am looking forward to a healthier future!”

“Hello, I’m Beki. I signed up for the Family Mile when my son was almost a year old. I’d got to a point where I really wanted to join a couple of baby groups but couldn’t pluck up the courage to sign up to any of them. You may think that’s silly but as a first time mum I suddenly became really socially awkward and the only things I knew what to talk about was my little baby boy.

I was scrolling through social media trying to find any cheap or free groups when I remembered I’d been handed a leaflet whilst on a walk with a friend around Mote Park. I grabbed it from the car and saw it offered baby and toddler walks around Mote Park for FREE, with the opportunity for a tea or coffee and a chat after and also rewards after a certain amount of miles.

At first I still couldn’t find the courage to attend the events so I walked around my local area for 1 mile a day. When I reached my first milestones, I was contacted to meet up at one of the baby and toddler groups to receive my rewards. This gave me the kick up the bottom I needed to finally join a group; which then led to me really enjoying my time out in the fresh air, talking about everything and anything with others who were just like me.

Being able to meet other mums and babies was just what I needed and the added bonus of the rewards I received for my family - Family Mile t-shirts and a free family swim at the leisure centre, helped me get out of my little (lonely) bubble I’d been stuck in. After this I became a regular on the baby and toddler walks - to the point that the Family Mile now can’t get rid of me.”

“When I moved to this country with my family last December, I was unaware of how difficult it would be to adjust. Before moving, I volunteered at a children’s hospital which gave me great satisfaction and I felt like I was not only doing good for others - but for myself too. But then that all stopped after we moved.

When I saw that The Mason Mile were recruiting for Ambassadors, I felt like this was the thing I had been missing and I immediately applied. The quick and encouraging response of the team was really outstanding!

With the support and training provided by Dan, I am confident that by being an Ambassador I can help the community and keep my morale high. I am really appreciative and thankful to The Mason Mile family for being so generous and kind and encouraging a newcomer volunteer like me!”

“My name is Janice, I lost my husband just over 5 years ago. Life became a real struggle and it was becoming easier to hide behind my front door. I knew I had to help myself so started walking everyday, short distances at first to get myself out.

Walking and talking to people and their dogs has saved me! I am happier, healthier, and sleep better, and I made new friends - human and canine! I believe I can help others like myself and that is why I am an Ambassador for The Family Mile.”

The benefits…

This is a great way to really make a difference to the lives of people in your local community, supporting them on their journey to move more.
