Maidstone United have become the first club to launch The Extra Mile.

George Elokobi and Noah Chesmain kickstarted the initiative with a meet and greet in the town centre on Saturday, before heading down to the home of the Stones for the derby game against Welling United.

Funded by the Mason Foundation and Sport England, it’s encouraging families and individuals to walk the last mile to the Gallagher Stadium on match days.

You can join the walk from Jubilee Square (outside Maidstone Town Hall) or pick a route on your way to the ground. For example, if you’re travelling in from London Road or Tonbridge Road, why not park at the Lockmeadow Centre and walk along the river?

Kay Skelton from the Stones Community Trust said: “We’re delighted to be the first to launch this initiative. From a club and trust point of view, this ticks every box.

“We know a lot of you walk in from home but for those who do drive or catch a bus or train, this is a great way to get a few steps under your belt on match days.

“There are some great rewards for families too. If you missed out on Saturday, get involved before the Hungerford game on 21 March.”

Families who sign up to The Family Mile Club and record their miles through the Strava app will be entitled to rewards on reaching set milestones throughout the year. These include family swims, rollerskating, soft play and more.

You can also rack up miles in your own time or check out some of the group walks by liking and following The Family Mile Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thefamilymile.

One such walking group is The Family Mile at Whatman Park. Just over the river from the Gallagher Stadium, the walk starts from Freedom Leisure at 12:15 on Fridays.
